Golden West Telecommunications has connected the communities of South Dakota for nearly a century. In the beginning, it was as simple as running phone lines along fenceposts. But no matter how much things have changed over the years, their mission remains the same: Golden West helps connect people to communities. And communities to people.

Message, a Rapid City marketing and communications firm, was tasked with developing a tv brand campaign tied to that mission. We began the process by developing a brand anthem. Something simple. Direct. Honest. Conversational. Neighborly. And, well, something with a whole mess of “ooohs” and “ahhhs”.

Anthem Lyrics-

Out on the road there are troubles and questions unanswered
The journey is long and plans could go wrong and fall through

But there’s some far light, it’s distant and bright
It’s leading me where I belong

There are the streets and the trees
These are the faces I see
This is the place that I know
This is my home

And at the end of the day
I’ll come back to this place
This is the place that I know
This is my home

Hey, Oh, oh, oh, oh

Next to the sea, or out in the wilder country
Or bustling streets where everyone gathers to meet
You know the land like the back of your hand
because this is the place you belong

chorus

Oh, oh, oh, oh

This is my home!

Oh, oh, oh, oh

There are the streets and the trees
These are the faces I see
This is the place that I know
This is my home

From there, we constructed the final version of the song that was shortened to standard commercial length.

The Process-

We also incorporated experimentation into the process to capture the authenticity of being a local communications provider in rural South Dakota.

Photos were shot on a 1970s Canon AE1 SLR Camera with a motor drive at about 4-6 frames per second on Fuji Superia 200 ISO film.

The rolls were then processed into uncut negatives and scanned into the computer at a very high resolution, individually cut, sequenced in numerical order, and layered and lined up in Photoshop.

The Photoshop layers were then exported into After Effects where the photos were turned into stop motion sequences.  Each roll of film renders about 1.5 seconds of motion. Those sequences were then exported out of After Effects into Final Cut Pro and edited into the commercial.
